Suburbs in Port Hedland
Port Hedland is Australia's highest-tonnage port, exporting more than 500 million tonnes of iron ore in 2017–18 from wharves at Finucane Island and the Port Hedland side. South Hedland, about 18 km inland, is the main residential and shopping centre. Wedgefield, just north of South Hedland off Great Northern Highway, holds light and service industry, while Boodarie is set aside for heavy industry. Road trains run in from the mines via Great Northern Highway, so the work mixes heavy vehicles with family cars and coastal corrosion.

Common auto electrical jobs in Port Hedland
Heavy industry, long-haul freight and harsh weather drive most of the auto electrical work around Hedland.
Road trains on Great Northern Highway
Road trains link Hedland with Newman and the inland mines, more than 450 km to the south, and also run east and west along the coast. Each trailer adds dozens of lights, metres of wiring and several plugs that take a pounding from heat, dust and corrugations. One poor earth can knock out lights down the whole set. LED markers, sealed plugs, a dedicated earth on every trailer and matched 24V batteries in the prime mover are the basics. A walk-around lighting check before every trip prevents defects and breakdowns a long way from help.

Salt air in the port town
Port Hedland and its port sit right on the coast, and the salt air attacks battery terminals, earth points, fuse boxes and trailer plugs. Fine iron ore dust settles on top and holds the moisture in. Corroded connections cause dim lights, hard starting and faults that come and go, and they often get mistaken for a bad battery or alternator. Regular cleaning, protective sprays and sealed connectors keep it in check. Our guide on how to clean corroded battery terminals covers the most common spot.

After the cyclone
Severe Tropical Cyclone Ilsa crossed the coast east of Port Hedland in April 2023, and Cyclone Zelia came ashore near the De Grey River in February 2025, closing the port for days and flooding roads. Heavy rain and wind-driven water get into trailer plugs, junction boxes and the modules under carpets. After a storm, check vehicles for wet footwells, green corrosion on plug pins and new warning lights before driving far. Never start a vehicle that has been sitting in floodwater until it has been inspected.
