Roebourne was proclaimed in 1866 and was the first gazetted town in the North West. It sits on the North West Coastal Highway about 40 km from Karratha. Wickham, built in 1970 for Cliffs Robe River Iron Associates, serves the Cape Lambert port facilities, where iron ore from Pannawonica is shipped. Point Samson is a small fishing village with the Johns Creek Boat Harbour nearby. Between them, the area mixes mine and port fleets, highway traffic, boats and long-term residents, so the work differs from town to town.
